A Raisin in the Sun, written by Lorraine Hansberry and produced on stage in 1959, marks a watershed moment in American theater. On the face of it, A Raisin in the Sun was not destined for success. With only one white cast member, an inexperienced director, and an untried playwright, Hansberry had difficulty finding financial backing for the play at a time when theater audiences were overwhelmingly white. It was an immediate success, however, and after several tours, it opened on Broadway, making it the first-ever Broadway play written by an African-American woman. What makes Hansberry’s writing remarkable is not only her accuracy in capturing the racial dynamics of her time, but her foresight in predicting the direction black culture would take in subsequent years.

The show is directed by HFC Theatre faculty member Christopher Bremer. Mr. Bremer is the executive director of the Jewish Ensemble Theatre, one of the oldest professional theatres in the Detroit area. In 2005 Mr. Bremer was selected as one of the five best directors in metropolitan Detroit by the Detroit Free Press. He has been nominated for best director by the Detroit Free Press, The Oakland Press and Between the Lines in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2010. He has directed shows for Meadowbrook Theatre, JET, The University of Detroit Mercy (in Athens Greece), and Henry Ford College as well as community theatres in the Detroit area. He has also performed in Italy, Greece, and 44 of the United States. Mr. Bremer directed the Winter 2013 production of HFC's Ruined and was nominated for The Wilde Award (Detroit) for his comedy, Moonlight and Magnolias at the Jewish Ensemble Theatre. Mr. Bremer directed the world premiere play Sugarhill, for the Jewish Ensemble Theatre in April, 2015. Sugarhill was nominated for 3 Encore Michigan Wilde Awards, including best production of a drama.
