Androcles And The Lion

Fable Presented As a Classic Greek Tragedy

Richard Marsh Dearborn Press and Guide June 1995

Dramatizations of ancient fables generally have limited audiences. Greek tragedies have an even more narrow following. What about staging a classic parable, say "Androcles and the Lion," in the style of a Greek tragedy ? From the artistic perspective, the idea is an excellent one. Being one of the Greek Aesop's fables, presenting it in the Greek tragedy form makes sense. The problem is the costs involved in mounting a performance. Unlike the other arts, theater it is not conducive to writing simply for artistic sake.
