Henry Ford College and the Dearborn Youth Theatre present “Seussical” Nov. 10-17

News Summary: “Seussical” – the Dr. Seuss musical – comes to Henry Ford College Nov. 10-17. The play will run for six performances.

October 2, 2017, Dearborn, Mich. – “I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam-I-am.”

These are two of the most famous sentences in children’s literature as found in the pages of “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss. This children’s classic is one of many of the beloved author’s books that’s found its way into “Seussical,” the Broadway musical coming to Henry Ford College (HFC) Nov. 10-17.

Presented by HFC and the Dearborn Youth Theatre (DYT), “Seussical” will run for six performances in the Adray Auditorium, located in the Grant U. MacKenzie Fine Arts Center (Building F on the main campus), on the following dates and times:

  • Friday, Nov. 10, at 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 11, at 8 p.m.
  • Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m.
  • Friday, Nov. 17, at 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 18, at 8 p.m.
  • Sunday, Nov. 19, at 2 p.m.

Based on the works of Dr. Seuss, the pen name of Theodore Seuss Geisel, “Seussical” includes stories and characters from at least 15 of his beloved books, including the “Horton Hears a Who,” “The Cat in the Hat,” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” During the course of the musical, some will fall in love, some will have desperate adventures, and some will even save the world!

Dr. Seuss believed in helping a friend, not giving up, keeping a promise. He believed in the value and dignity of others, protecting the sweetness of the world, of peace among nations and in every heart. He believed in the pure power of imagination. These are the themes of the play, which is also filled with laughter, fun, and song and dance, according to director Mary Bremer-Beer, who teaches theatre at HFC and is a long-time DYT director.

In addition to HFC students, the cast features many local residents who have starred in previous HFC and DYT productions. David Alexander is the music director, Valerie Mould is the choreographer, and Judy Fletcher is the costume designer.

“Seussical” debuted in 2000. Its overarching plot centers on “Horton Hears a Who!” centering on Horton the Elephant’s efforts to protect the people of Who-ville. The Cat in the Hat – perhaps Dr. Seuss’ most famous creation – is also featured prominently.

“This delightful show will charm audiences from ages 5 to 85. Anyone who grew up reading the works of Dr. Seuss will enjoy this musical – it’s for the young and the young at heart,” said Bremer-Beer.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students with a valid photo ID, HFC employees, and senior citizens. To purchase tickets online.
