Suburbia

Henry Ford Community College’s Theatre Arts Department will present Eric Bagosian’s hard-hitting commentary on one aspect of American culture, SubUrbia, directed by Christopher Bremer on August 19, 20, 21 and August 26, 27, 28 2010. Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8PM at the Henry Ford Centennial Library, 16301 Michigan Ave, Dearborn, Mi. All seats are 7.00. Call 313.845.9817 for reservations and more information.

SubUrbia chronicles the nighttime activities of a group of aimless 20-somethings and their reunion with a former high school classmate who has become a successful musician.

The play was originally produced at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theatre of the Lincoln Center Theatre from April 27 through August 28, 1994, featuring Martha Plimpton, Josh Hamilton and Steve Zahn. The director Robert Falls won a 1994-1995 OBIE Award for the production. It was presented in 2006 at Second Stage Theatre with Kieran Culkin, Gaby Hoffmann and Jessica Capshaw, and was directed by Jo Bonney. A film version was made in 1996 starring Steve Zahn, Parker Posey and Giovanni Ribisi.

The New York Post has characterized the play as:
“…one of those rare must-sees…Bogosian's themes cover escape and re-invention, the American dream…and the American nightmare. This is ambitious stuff and the brave ending has an unexpected twist leaving the air suffused with tragedy. Yes, a must-see!"

The NY Daily News states:
"Like the charismatic performer/writer himself…his SubUrbia characters seethe with large caustic doses of humor, anger and angst…there's no denying Bogosian's crackling intelligence, his rejection of easy sentimentality, and the way he often does capture the cadences of alienation."
